Origin of Name

During the Qing Dynasty, a temple named Tin Hau Temple was built in the middle of the temple street, which is called Yau Ma Tei Tin Hau Temple. On the other hand, Temple Street is also known as “Men’s Street” because of its similar nature to “Ladies Market” in Mongkok and its male-dominated visitors. The younger generation in Hong Kong mostly use “old temple” as the common name of temple street.

Features

Starting in the evening of each day, the stalls on the street of Temple Street will open. Those stalls and booths sell a wide range of goods including men’s clothing, handicrafts, tea sets, jades, antiques, and even cheap electronic products. There are also many fortune-telling and phase-viewing stalls near Tin Hou Temple, and there will be Cantonese opera performances. In the early years, there were also some martial artists performing and selling medicine here.
